It will not be too much to say that we all put new hopes and set big expectations for every new year of our lives, especially when it comes to music. Nobody knew and expected things to get so much wrong with the world pandemic situation. It stopped the planet from moving and turned our lives into one hundred and eighty degrees. Lucky us, the release of new rap albums obviously did not suffer much from a crisis because awesome pieces started to appear from day one. It is hard to say which are the best rap albums for 2020 so far because there are many interesting projects to choose from. Here are our picks so far.
Eminem – Music To Be Murdered By
As always, Shady did surprise even his most dedicated followers with releasing a new album at the beginning of the year, for which nobody knew. The world knew about “Music To Be Murdered By” when it was completely released. The twenty tracks have very interesting features, one of which is this with Juice WRLD for “Godzilla”. The song with Ed Sheeran is one very unexpected and successful collaboration. Also, the album shows a big change in the way Em worked so far, collaborating with the “new wave” rappers such as Young M.A, Don Toliver, and more. Like usual, some of the lyrics caused social eruption and even political figures addressed the album.
Lil Wayne – Funeral
Eminem was not all for January, as the last day of the month brought to life Lil Wayne’s new project called Funeral. The long waited – almost four years – the album is not so dark as its title. Most of the songs though are solo presented from the rapper. The few features include Lil Baby, Big Sean and 2 Chainz. The project came with a “Deluxe” edition on May 30, 2020, with additional 8 tracks. The “Funeral” LP debuted at # 1 on Billboard in the first week of February.
Royce Da 5’9 – The Allegory
The next month of 2020, February also did not leave us bored as The Allegory was released. This is the eighth album in a row for Royce Da 5’9” and it was also produced by him. The features cannot be neglected. It includes Griselda, DJ Premier, T.I. and more. In addition to the already great album is the speech from Eminem in the “Perspective” skit, who surprisingly is not one of the features in the project.
Joyner Lucas – ADHD
The album was streamed at the same time at all platforms and it was absolutely reached everybody, who wanted to listen to it. ADHD is the first project released under the rapper’s own label “Twenty Nine Music Group”. Half of the eighteen tracks were not unknown, as they were already dropped as singles. The rest featured great names as Timbaland, Chris Brown and more.
Jay Electronica – A Written Testimony
Jay also chooses March for his new release. Probably it holds many records – for longest waited project – ten years, for the age of the first release of the rapper – he is forty-three at the moment, and so on, but all these facts did not stop him from being in our top eleven best rap albums of 2020 so far. The “A Written Testimony” project got stuck, but then it found it the best time to come up. In his talk for the Written Testimony Jay shares his greatest inspiration was LL Coll J. The album’s main collaborator is Jay-Z, even though his name doesn’t appear in the playlists. Yes, according to the fans, Jay Electronica and Jigga created a masterpiece.
